What Is AISI 8630 Steel?
AISI 8630 is a low-alloy steel with medium carbon content (0.28–0.33%). Its blend of nickel, chromium, and molybdenum improves hardenability while providing a balance of strength, toughness, and wear resistance after heat treatment. With a tensile strength of 620 MPa and excellent fatigue resistance, it performs well under dynamic loads. The alloy is 70% machinable in its annealed state and is well-suited for forging, rolling, and welding (with preheating). These qualities make it ideal for parts such as connecting rods, bolts, shafts, and other high-stress components.

8630 Steel Forging Process

8630 Steel Heat Treatment
アニーリング
- Best choice: Austenitize at 845°C (1550°F), furnace-cool to 730°C (1350°F), then slow-cool to 640°C (1180°F) at 20°C/hr (36°F/hr).
This method produces a microstructure with coarse pearlite and minimal ferrite. The result is improved machinability and toughness. By carefully controlling the cooling rate, the steel gains more uniform properties, making it well-suited for demanding applications.
- Other Option: Iso-anneal at 660°C (1225°F) for improved machinability.
ノーマライゼーション
Heat to 870°C (1600°F), air-cool to refine microstructure.
硬化
Austenitize at 830–870°C (1525–1600°F), and quench in oil/water based on part geometry.
焼き戻し
Reheat to 150–650°C (302–1202°F) to achieve target hardness and stress relief.
