At SteelPro Group, we are a trusted supplier with years of experience in delivering high-quality T15 high-speed tool steel. With a proven track record of successful collaborations across industries, we offer tailored solutions to meet your specific requirements
What Is T15 Tool Steel?
T15 is a high-speed tool steel with excellent hardness, wear resistance, and high-temperature strength, featuring high vanadium and cobalt content. It’s ideal for demanding cutting and machining applications, including drills, milling cutters, taps, gear-cutting tools, and cold work dies. Compared to M2, T15 performs better at high temperatures but is harder to machine and grind. Proper heat treatment is essential to prevent cracking.

T15 Tool Steel Heat Treatment
Annealing
Purpose: Softens the steel, making it easier to machine or shape. After annealing, T15 tool steel typically has a hardness of about 277 HB.
Process: Heat the steel slowly to 1575-1600°F (857-871°C), hold for 1 hour per inch of thickness (minimum 2 hours), then cool slowly in the furnace to 1000°F (538°C), and finish cooling to room temperature.
Hardening
- Preheating:
Preheat the steel to 1500-1550°F (816-845°C) and equalize. A second preheat at 1850-1900°F (1010-1040°C) is recommended for vacuum hardening.
- Austenitizing:
Heat the steel rapidly to 2150-2260°F (1177-1238°C) in a furnace or 2150-2250°F (1177-1221°C) in a salt bath. The choice of temperature affects the final properties—lower temperatures enhance toughness, while higher temperatures improve hardness and wear resistance.
- Quenching:
Quench in pressurized gas or warm oil. For gas quenching, maintain a minimum pressure of 4 bars and a cooling rate of 400°F per minute (222°C). For oil, quench until the steel is black (around 900°F or 482°C) and finish cooling in air.
Tempering
Process: Immediately after quenching, temper the steel at 1000-1100°F (538-593°C) for 2 hours. Air cool to room temperature. For best results, perform triple tempering to ensure uniform hardness and toughness.
