Description
What Is FH550?
FH550 steel is a high-strength, low-alloy structural steel primarily composed of iron, carbon, and alloying elements like manganese and silicon, with possible additions of chromium, molybdenum, or nickel to improve corrosion resistance and strength. The “F” denotes its excellent toughness at -60°C, and the “H” signifies high yield strength. With a yield strength of 550 MPa, it can endure significant stress without permanent deformation.
One of FH550 steel’s key advantages is its combination of strength and formability, making it both durable and easy to process. It also offers excellent weldability, reducing the risk of cracking during welding due to its low carbon content.
FH550 is widely used in shipbuilding, bridges, offshore platforms, and large industrial structures, particularly in cold environments such as polar marine engineering. Its high strength and relatively light weight make it ideal for pressure vessels and cranes where both durability and weight savings are crucial.
Characteristics of FH550
Here are the major characteristics of FH550 steel:
- High strength for heavy-duty applications.
- Excellent toughness at low temperatures.
- Resistant to impact and fatigue.
- Suitable for use in harsh marine environments.
- Good weldability and formability.

Machining
Heat Treatment
- Preheat: Heat the steel slowly to 600-650°C to reduce thermal shock.
- Austenitizing: Increase the temperature to 880-920°C and hold until uniform heat distribution is achieved.
- Quenching: Rapidly cool the steel by quenching in oil or water to achieve martensitic transformation.
- Tempering: Reheat the steel to 500-700°C depending on desired hardness and toughness. Hold for 1-2 hours, then cool in air.
- Stress Relieving (optional): After quenching, reheat to 150-200°C to relieve residual stresses, then cool slowly.
Surface Treatment
- Anodizing: Enhances corrosion resistance and appearance.
- Powder Coating: Provides a durable and protective finish.
- Electroplating: Adds a metal layer for corrosion and wear resistance.
- Polishing: Improves surface smoothness and shine.
- Sandblasting: Cleans and textures the surface.
