Description
What Is DH550?
DH550 steel is a high-strength, low-alloy structural steel primarily used in shipbuilding and offshore applications. “D” stands for toughness rating at -20°C, while “H” signifies high yield strength (≥550MPa). It offers a balance of excellent strength, low-temperature toughness, and resistance to corrosion, suitable for challenging marine environments.
Key features include good weldability, enhanced durability under dynamic loads, and resistance to deformation even under extreme conditions. DH550 maintains structural integrity in both sub-zero temperatures and harsh weather, ensuring long service life. Typical applications include ship hulls, offshore platforms, drilling rigs, and other heavy-duty marine structures that demand high strength, toughness, and reliability.
Characteristics of DH550
- Enhanced structural stability and load capacity.
- Excellent ductility for superior formability.
- Exceptional fatigue resistance for high-stress applications.
- Lightweight design to reduce weight and optimize material usage.
- Outstanding corrosion resistance against harsh environments.

Heat Treatment
- Preheating: Heat to 300–500°C (572–932°F) to reduce thermal shock.
- Austenitizing: Heat to 900–950°C (1652–1742°F) and hold until uniform temperature is achieved.
- Quenching: Rapidly cool in water or oil to room temperature to form martensite.
- Tempering: Reheat to 500–700°C (932–1292°F) to achieve desired hardness and reduce brittleness. Hold for 1–2 hours, then air-cool.
- Post-Treatment Check: Verify hardness and microstructure through testing for quality assurance.
Surface Treatment
- Shot Blasting: Removes surface impurities and enhances adhesion for coatings.
- Galvanizing: Applies a zinc layer to prevent corrosion.
- Powder Coating: Provides a durable, protective, and decorative finish.
- Anodizing: Enhances corrosion resistance and surface hardness.
- Chemical Treatment: Uses phosphating or passivation to improve corrosion resistance.
