Description

What Is FH36?

FH36 is a high-strength, low-alloy shipbuilding steel primarily composed of iron, carbon, manganese, and small amounts of silicon and phosphorus. “F” stands for toughness rating at -60°C, while “H” stands for high strength. Its standout features are high toughness, excellent weldability, and strong resistance to harsh, cold marine environments. FH36 is commonly used in shipbuilding, offshore platforms, and other marine structures.

Certification: ABS, BV, CCS, DNV, KR, LR, NK, RINA, RS, PRS Equivalent Grades: ABS FH36, LR FH36, BV FH36, DNV FH36, KR FH36, NK FH36, RINA FH36, CCS FH36

Characteristics of FH36

FH36 steel is valued for its high strength and toughness, making it ideal for shipbuilding and offshore structures. It performs exceptionally well in cold environments due to its impact resistance. FH36 also has good weldability, allowing for smooth, reliable joints during fabrication. Its resilience against harsh marine conditions helps extend its operational lifespan and reduces maintenance needs.

For applications that require specific certifications or conditions like colder climates or extreme environments, consider alternatives such as AH36, DH36, or EH36. These grades offer comparable strength and toughness but are tailored for different structural needs.

Machining

Heat Treatment

  • Normalizing: Heat to 900-950°C, hold until uniform, then air cool.
  • Annealing: Heat to 600-650°C, hold for 1-2 hours, then furnace cool.
  • Stress Relieving: Heat to 530-580°C, hold for 1-2 hours, then air cool.
  • Quenching and Tempering: Heat to 880-920°C for quenching, followed by water or oil quench; temper at 580-650°C, hold for 1-2 hours, then air cool.

Surface Finish

  • Shot Blasting: Removes impurities and prepares the surface for coating.
  • Pickling: Uses acid to clean the surface from scale and rust.
  • Galvanizing: Applies a protective zinc coating to prevent corrosion.
  • Painting: Adds protective or decorative coatings after surface cleaning.
  • Grinding: Smooths the surface, improving finish quality for subsequent processes.
