SB450 Steel | Pressure Vessel Steel
SB450 Steel | Pressure Vessel Steel
SB450 steel is a high-strength structural steel used in various applications. The name “SB450” indicates its yield strength of 450 MPa. Its aliases include equivalent grades like S355J2 and Q345B. This steel offers excellent weldability, machinability, and toughness. It is commonly used in construction, shipbuilding, and machinery manufacturing due to its ability to withstand heavy loads. Equivalent grades include S355J2 (EN), Q345R (GB), P235GH, and ASTM A515-65.
We provide SB 450, SB 410, and SB 480 products (sb410 steel plate) per standard JIS G 3103, with 6-150 mm thicknesses, widths of 900-4800 mm, and lengths of 3000-25000 mm.
Description
What is SB450 Steel?
SB450 is a high-strength low-alloy structural steel, primarily composed of about 98% iron with alloying elements like manganese, silicon, and nickel, produced in a hot-rolled form under the JIS G3103 standard. It exhibits excellent weldability, machinability, and toughness, making it suitable for critical applications such as pressure vessels, liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage tanks, boilers, and chemical equipment. Additionally, it is used in construction and machinery manufacturing.Characteristics of SB450 Steel
SB450 steel features excellent weldability and low-temperature toughness, with a minimum yield strength of 245 MPa. It offers higher strength and corrosion resistance compared to traditional pressure vessel steels, making it suitable for demanding applications. This steel is often used in pressure vessels, LNG storage tanks, boilers, and chemical equipment. Alternative grades such as A516 Grade 70, A537 Class 1, and SA662 provide enhanced toughness, better corrosion resistance, and improved mechanical properties, making them suitable substitutes for critical applications.Chemical Compositions

Machining
SB450 Heat Treatment:
- Heating: Heat the steel to 850°C – 900°C (1562°F – 1652°F) and maintain at this temperature to ensure uniform austenitization.
- Quenching: Rapidly cool in water or oil to room temperature to increase hardness and strength.
- Tempering: Reheat to 550°C – 650°C (1022°F – 1202°F) to reduce brittleness and enhance toughness.
SB450 Surface Finish
- Shot Blasting: Removes impurities, improves surface finish, and prepares for coating.
- Pickling: Eliminates surface oxides and enhances corrosion resistance.
- Electroplating: Adds a protective metal layer to improve wear and corrosion resistance.
- Galvanizing: Coats with zinc to prevent rusting and increase durability.
- Polishing: Provides a smooth surface with improved aesthetics and resistance to contamination.
- Painting or Coating: Adds a protective layer to prevent corrosion and extend service life.
Custom surface treatment requirements can be accommodated upon request.
