A516 | Pressure Vessel Steel

A516 | Pressure Vessel Steel

A516 is a carbon steel under ASTM standards for pressure vessels and boilers. It is designed for moderate- and low-temperature services, offering high strength and weldability. Equivalent grades include SB450 (JIS), P265GH (EN), and Q345R (GB). A516 is widely used in oil and gas equipment, power plants, chemical tanks, and storage vessels due to its toughness and ductility. Common grades like ASTM A516 Grade 70 are popular for their balance of strength and performance.

We offer A516 Gr.55/60/65/70 steel in sizes ranging from 3000mm to 25000mm in length, 900mm to 4800mm in width, and 6mm to 150mm in thickness.

Description

What is A516?

ASTM A516 is a low-alloy carbon steel made of about 98% iron with carbon, manganese, phosphorus, and sulfur. It is hot-rolled into solid plates and used for pressure vessels and boilers due to its strength, weldability, and low-temperature toughness. Available in Grades 55, 60, 65, and 70, it provides varying levels of performance to meet specific needs in industries like oil storage, chemical processing, and power generation.

Characteristics of A516 Steel

A516 steel offers excellent ductility, high strength, and toughness, performing well under low temperatures. It is widely used in pressure vessels, boilers, and oil storage tanks. However, due to its density, it may be relatively heavier. For projects requiring lighter materials, alternatives like A737 and P420M offer lower weight while maintaining similar strength and toughness. Other suitable substitutes include SB450, P355NH, and P460M, which provide good mechanical properties and enhanced performance for specific applications.

Machining

A516 Heat Treatment

  1. Normalizing: Heat to 900°C – 950°C (1650°F – 1740°F) and air cool.
    • Effect: Refines grain size, improves ductility and toughness, and prepares the steel for further processing.
  2. Stress Relieving: Heat to 540°C – 650°C (1000°F – 1200°F) and cool in air.
    • Effect: Reduces residual stress from welding or forming.
  3. Quenching and Tempering: Heat to 800°C – 900°C (1470°F – 1650°F), quench in water or oil, then temper at 600°C – 700°C (1110°F – 1290°F).
    • Effect: Increases strength and hardness while improving toughness.

A516 Surface Finish

  1. Shot Blasting: Removes surface impurities and prepares for coating or painting.
  2. Pickling: Cleans the steel by removing oxides, improving corrosion resistance.
  3. Galvanizing: Coats with zinc to prevent rust and increase durability.
  4. Electroplating: Adds a protective metal layer, enhancing wear and corrosion resistance.
  5. Painting/Coating: Adds a protective layer to improve longevity in corrosive environments.
  6. Polishing: Improves surface finish and aesthetic appeal.
