Description

What Is S460MLO?

S460MLO is a high-strength structural steel under the EN10225-1:2019 standard, primarily used in offshore and marine engineering. It features a minimum yield strength of 460 MPa, excellent toughness at -40°C, and good weldability, ensuring reliable performance in harsh conditions.

The name “S460MLO” indicates structural steel with 460 MPa yield strength, thermomechanically rolled (TMCP) for improved mechanical properties, and optimized for low-temperature environments. A key benefit is its superior resistance to seawater corrosion, making it ideal for long-term use in marine environments.

Typical applications include offshore platforms, ships, docks, and subsea pipelines, where high strength, toughness, and corrosion resistance are essential for structural integrity and safety.

Characteristics of S460MLO

  • High strength, suitable for heavy structures
  • Good weldability, making it easy to join
  • Resistant to wear and fatigue under stress
  • Durable in extreme temperatures and environments
  • Lightweight compared to traditional steel, improving efficiency

Machining

Heat Treatment

  • Preheating: Preheat to 150–300°C (302–572°F) to avoid thermal shock.
  • Annealing: Heat to 600–650°C (1112–1202°F), hold until uniform, then cool slowly in the furnace.
  • Normalizing: Heat to 880–920°C (1616–1688°F), air-cool to room temperature.
  • Quenching (if needed): Heat to 850–890°C (1562–1634°F), quench in water or oil.
  • Tempering: Reheat to 200–650°C (392–1202°F) depending on desired mechanical properties, hold, then cool in air.
  • Stress Relieving: Heat to 530–580°C (986–1076°F) for 1–2 hours, cool slowly to minimize residual stresses.

Note: Follow specific cooling rates and tempering temperatures based on application to prevent brittleness.

Surface Treatment

  • Shot Blasting: To remove impurities and enhance surface adhesion.
  • Painting/Coating: Applying protective layers for corrosion resistance.
  • Pickling: Using acid to remove rust, scale, or contaminants.
  • Galvanizing: Zinc coating to prevent corrosion.
  • Polishing: Achieving smooth and shiny surfaces.
