- John

35NCD16 steel is a high-performance alloy designed for extreme strength and durability. SteelPro Group supplies 35NCD16 in various forms, including bars, billets, forgings, and custom-machined components. With excellent toughness and wear resistance, our products are a preferred material for structural and mechanical parts.
This article covers its key properties, industry standards, available sizes, applications, and heat treatment processes.
What Is 35NCD16 Steel?
35NCD16 is a high-strength, low-alloy NiCrMo steel with excellent toughness and fracture resistance. It is produced through vacuum arc remelting (VAR) for improved purity and performance. This alloy is utilized in aviation, automotive, and manufacturing sectors. It can air-harden up to 90 mm thick and supports components up to 300 mm.
This steel machines well, with further improvement possible through calcium addition or re-sulfurization. However, re-sulfurization can reduce impact and fatigue strength in the transverse direction.

35NCD16 Steel Heat Treatment
Annealing
Annealing is performed to soften the steel, enhance machinability, and relieve internal stresses. This process is typically applied before extensive machining or cold working.
- Temperature: 650 – 680°C (1202 – 1256°F)
- Cooling Method: Slow cooling in the furnace
- Expected Hardness: ≤ 269 HB
At SteelPro Group, we provide annealed 35NCD16 steel in bar, billet, and custom-forged sections, easy to process before final heat treatment.
Normalizing
Normalizing refines the grain structure and improves mechanical properties before further heat treatment steps.
- Temperature: 850 – 880°C (1562 – 1616°F)
- Holding Time: 1 hour
- Cooling Method: Air cooling
Hardening (Quenching)
Hardening increases strength and hardness by rapidly cooling the steel after heating to the austenitizing temperature.
- Temperature:
835 – 865°C (1535 – 1589°F) for standard quenching
855 – 885°C (1571 – 1625°F) for higher-strength applications
- Holding Time: 1 hour
- Cooling Method:
Air hardening is effective up to 90 mm (3.54 in) thickness. Oil quenching is recommended for sections over 90 mm to ensure full hardness.
Deep Cryogenic Treatment (Sub-Zero Treatment, Optional)
This optional step enhances wear resistance and fatigue strength by transforming retained austenite into martensite. This step is optional but recommended for aerospace and heavy-duty applications.
- Temperature: -75°C (-103°F)
- Holding Time: 3 hours
- Warming Method: Air warming
Tempering
Tempering is performed after quenching to reduce internal stresses and achieve the required hardness and toughness. The chosen tempering temperature directly affects final mechanical properties.
Tempering Temperature | Tensile Strength (MPa/ksi) | Yield Strength (MPa/ksi) | Hardness (HB/HRC) | Function |
200 – 220°C (392 – 428°F) | 1760 – 2010 MPa (255 – 291 ksi) | ≥ 1420 MPa (206 ksi) | ≥ 48 HRC | Max hardness |
550 – 580°C (1022 – 1076°F) | 1230 – 1380 MPa (178 – 200 ksi) | ≥ 1030 MPa (149 ksi) | 363 – 415 HB | Balance strength and ductility |
650 – 675°C (1202 – 1247°F) | ~1000 MPa (~145 ksi) | ~850 MPa (~123 ksi) | ≤ 295 HB | Enhance toughness, reduce hardness |
