ASTM A234 WP11 Steel Chemical Composition
Elements | Content (wt%) |
Carbon (C) | 0.05 – 0.20 |
Manganese (Mn) | 0.30 – 0.80 |
Silicon (Si) | 0.50 – 1.00 |

Phosphorus (P) | ≤ 0.030 |
Chromium (Cr) | 1.00 – 1.50 |
Molybdenum (Mo) | 0.44 – 0.65 |
Importance of Chromium (Cr) and Molybdenum (Mo)
- Chromium (Cr)
The controlled chromium content ensures the material remains strong and resistant to scaling. It improves oxidation and corrosion resistance, especially at high temperatures. It also increases strength, making WP11 more durable in extreme conditions.
- Molybdenum (Mo)
It enhances creep resistance and prevents softening in high-heat applications. It also helps maintain structural integrity by reducing grain growth and embrittlement. Additionally, molybdenum boosts corrosion resistance, especially in acidic environments

WP11 Steel Heat Treatment
WP11 steel is heated and cooled under controlled temperatures to improve strength, ductility, and resistance to creep and oxidation. Our heat treatment follows ASTM A960/A960M and ASTM A234 standards.
Annealing
WP11 steel is heated to ≥ 1,650 ℉ (≥ 900 ℃), held for a specified duration, and then slowly cooled in a controlled furnace.
- Purpose: Refines grain structure, reduces hardness, and enhances machinability.
Normalizing
WP11 steel is heated to ≥ 1,750 ℉ (≥ 955 ℃), held for uniform heating, and then air-cooled to room temperature.
- Purpose: Improves strength, refines grain size, and relieves internal stresses.
Tempering
- WP11 Class 1, 2, 3: ≥ 1,150 ℉ (≥ 620 ℃)
- WP11 Class 3: ≥ 1,250 ℉ (≥ 675 ℃)
The normalized WP11 steel is reheated to the tempering temperature, held for a specified time, and then air-cooled.
- Purpose: Enhances toughness, improves ductility, and reduces brittleness.
Post-Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT)
The welded area is uniformly heated, maintained at 1,100 – 1,250 ℉ (595 – 675 ℃). Then slowly cooled to prevent thermal cracking.
- Purpose: Reduces residual stresses, enhances toughness, and improves corrosion
WP11 Pipe Fittings Processing
Manufacturing
WP11 steel fittings are produced using forging, rolling, pressing, extruding, bending, and machining. These processes ensure precise dimensions and structural integrity.
Weldability
WP11 offers good weldability and supports TIG, MIG, resistance welding, and submerged arc welding. For thicker sections, post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) is recommended to minimize residual stress and enhance durability.
Machinability
WP11 is moderately challenging to machine, requiring carbide cutting tools and controlled feed rates to maintain accuracy and surface quality.
Forming Conditions
- Hot forming: Best performed between 620–980°C (1150–1800°F), followed by controlled cooling.
- Cold forming: May require stress relief or normalizing to restore mechanical properties.
Quality Control
Each batch of our WP11 pipe fittings undergoes hardness testing to ensure compliance with mechanical property requirements, with a maximum hardness of 217 HBW.
