Why Chose CPM S30V Steel: Properties, Process, Uses
- John
SteelPro Group has over a decade of experience in supplying CPM S30V steel. We provide high-quality CPM S30V steel products, including plates and bars, to a variety of industries. Our team is always ready to assist in solving your specific needs.
What Is CPM S30V Steel?
CPM S30V is a martensitic stainless steel made using powder metallurgy. It has excellent toughness, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance. Its vanadium carbides enhance wear resistance, while the powder metallurgy process ensures uniformity and dimensional stability. Compared to steels like 440C and D2, S30V excels in toughness and corrosion resistance while maintaining high hardness, making it ideal for premium cutlery and high-performance tools.
Crucible Industries developed CPM S30V steel. The steel was created in collaboration with the knife maker, Chris Reeve. SteelPro Group also offers this high-performance steel, providing industries with a reliable solution for tools and products.
CPM S30V Steel Chemical Composition
CPM S30V steel’s balanced chemical composition enhances wear resistance and edge retention. High chromium improves corrosion resistance, while tungsten and vanadium strengthen carbides, optimizing hardness and toughness.
Here is an overview of its main chemical characteristics.
Element | Composition (%) |
Carbon (C) | ≤ 1.45 |
Chromium (Cr) | 14 |
Iron (Fe) | 78.55 |
Tungsten (W) | 2 |
Vanadium (V) | 4 |
CPM S30V Steel Physical Properties

CPM S30V Steel Heat Treatment
Forging
To start the heat treatment process for CPM S30V, we begin with forging. It is essential to heat the steel to 2100°F (1150°C) and avoid forging below 1750°F (950°C) to maintain material integrity.
Annealing
Next, heat the steel to 1650°F (900°C) and hold for 2 hours. Cool slowly to 1100°F (595°C) at no more than 25°F (15°C) per hour, then furnace or air cool to room temperature.
This process softens the steel, resulting in a hardness of about BHN 255.
Stress Relieving
Heat the steel to 1100-1300°F (595-705°C) for annealed parts or 25-50°F (15-30°C) below the tempering temperature for hardened parts, holding for 2 hours before cooling in still air or furnace cooling.
Hardening
Before austenitizing, preheat CPM S30V to 1550-1600°F (845-870°C) to ensure uniform temperature distribution and reduce thermal stresses.
Heat the steel to 1900-2000°F (1035-1095°C) for 15-30 minutes to fully transform to austenite. Quench with air or positive pressure (minimum 2 bar) to below 125°F (50°C). Alternatively, use interrupted oil quenching to around 1000°F (540°C), then cool with air.
Tempering
Finally, temper the steel at 400-750°F (200-400°C) for 2 hours per cycle. A double tempering process is recommended, with the option of a freezing treatment between cycles for enhanced hardenability.
