980DP steel is a high-strength material used in automotive manufacturing for its excellent combination of strength and formability. This article will cover its properties, applications, surface treatments, and production processes.
Learn how SteelPro Group ensures the best quality through advanced manufacturing techniques and a variety of surface treatment options tailored to your needs.
What Is 980DP Steel?
DP980 is a high-strength dual-phase steel primarily used in the automotive industry. It combines excellent strength with good formability with a yield strength of 980 MPa. This makes it ideal for producing lightweight, crash-resistant components, such as structural parts and reinforcements.
SteelPro Group’s 980DP steel coils offer a variety of specifications, including customizable sizes and processing options to meet specific client needs. We can produce 980DP steel coils with varying yield-to-tensile ratios (YS/TS) according to your project requirements. Our primary products are as follows:
Grade | Features | Applications |
550/980DP | High elongation | A-pillars, B-pillars, door reinforcements |
700/980DP | High bending performance | Structural parts, reinforcements |
800/980DP | High strength, good formability, and weldability | Side impact beams, crash boxes |
980/1180DP | Extremely high strength | Impact zones, reinforcement components |
980DP Steel Coils Dimensions and Certifications
- Thickness: 0.60 mm to 3.00 mm (0.024 in to 0.118 in)
- Width: 900 mm to 1,600 mm (35.4 in to 62.99 in)
SteelPro Group’s 980DP steel coils are manufactured to the highest quality standards and are certified under ISO/TS16949:2009 and ISO9001:2008. We also offer cut-to-length services to meet specific customer requirements.
In addition to coils, we also offer 980DP steel tubes, available in round, square, and rectangular shapes, meeting the same rigorous quality standards.

980DP Steel Applications
980DP steel is primarily used in the automotive industry due to its excellent combination of high strength, good formability, and excellent impact resistance. Its applications include:
Automotive Body Parts
- Door panels, fenders, and roof rails, where strength and weight reduction are critical.
Chassis Components
- Structural parts like cross members, reinforcement bars, and side rails require both high tensile strength and ductility.
Crash-Resistant Parts
- Impact-resistant components designed to enhance vehicle safety, such as bumpers, door beams, and energy-absorbing parts.
Suspension Parts
- Used in suspension arms and other high-stress parts due to its high strength-to-weight ratio.
980DP Steel Coil Coating Types and Thickness
We offer a variety of surface treatment options for our 980DP steel products. These treatments are designed to enhance the steel’s corrosion resistance, formability, and overall durability
Coating Type | Features | Coating Thickness |
GI (Galvanized) | Corrosion resistance for general automotive parts | G30, G40, G60, G90 |
GA (Galvannealed) | Enhanced formability, welding compatibility, and corrosion resistance | G30, G40, G60 |
UC (Uncoated) | For further processing, like chromium plating | N/A |
980DP Steel Coil Manufacturing Processes
The production of 980DP steel coils involves the following critical steps:
- Steelmaking: High-quality raw materials are refined in electric arc furnaces or blast furnaces, ensuring a precise chemical composition.
- Hot Rolling: The steel is passed through a series of rollers at high temperatures to reduce thickness and shape it into coils. We utilize a unique furnace roller design to minimize deformation during heating
- Annealing: After hot rolling, the coils undergo a controlled annealing process to create a dual-phase microstructure, enhancing strength and formability.
- Cold Rolling: In some cases, the steel is further processed through cold rolling to refine thickness and improve surface finish.
- Coating (if applicable): A galvanized or other protective coating is applied to enhance corrosion resistance.
- Finishing: The final product undergoes various finishing treatments, including tempering and surface treatment, based on customer requirements.
