- John
DP590 steel coils are strong, flexible, and easy to shape, making them ideal for automotive and industrial uses. This article explains how DP590 gets its unique structure, its manufacturing process, and how it can improve your projects.
At SteelPro Group, we provide high-quality DP590 steel coils in custom sizes to fit your needs. Keep reading to find out why this material is the right choice for your next project.
What Is DP590 Steel?
DP590 steel belongs to the dual-phase (DP) category of advanced high-strength steel. It features a distinct combination of soft ferrite and hard martensite phases. This combination gives it high strength and good formability. It is often used in applications where crash protection, lightweight design, and accuracy are important.

DP590 Steel Properties
Dual-Phase Structure
It is made of two phases: soft ferrite for flexibility and hard martensite for strength. This structure provides both high strength and good formability, making it ideal for shaping complex parts.
Lightweight and Strong
It reduces the overall weight of vehicles or structures while maintaining durability, and improving fuel efficiency and performance.
Weldable
It works well with most welding methods, keeping joints strong and secure.
Cost-efficient
DP590 steel may cost more upfront than basic low-carbon steels, but its high strength, easy processing, and long-lasting durability make it a smart and affordable choice for industries needing both quality and value.
Applications of DP590 Steel Coils
Automotive Industry
DP590 steel is widely used in the automotive sector, where its high strength-to-weight ratio and crash-resistance properties are critical. Common applications include:
- Structural Reinforcements: Chassis frames and cross-members.
- Safety Components: Side intrusion beams, impact zones, and crash rails.
- Body Panels: Inner panels, door reinforcements, and roof structures.
Industrial Applications
Beyond automotive uses, DP590 steel is also ideal in industrial settings that demand robust performance and long-lasting strength, such as:
- Equipment Frames: Heavy machinery support structures.
- Storage Systems: Pallet racks and high-load shelving.
- Construction Materials: Lightweight building frameworks and modular systems.
DP590 Steel Coil Manufacturing Processes
The production process of DP590 steel coils mainly includes hot rolling, pickling, cold rolling, and annealing. The unique dual-phase microstructure of DP590 is achieved by carefully controlling the temperature and cooling rate during the annealing process.
Heating and Soaking
The steel is heated to 800°C–900°C (1,472°F–1,652°F), where ferrite and austenite phases form. It is then held at this temperature for 1–5 minutes, depending on the steel’s composition and thickness.
Controlled Cooling (Quenching)
The coil is cooled rapidly at a rate of over 50°C per second, which transforms the austenite into martensite while keeping the ferrite phase intact. The cooling is stopped below 500°C (932°F) to avoid forming unwanted phases.
The final structure contains about 20% martensite within a ferrite matrix, giving the steel its high strength and good ductility.
In addition to these manufacturing processes, DP590 steel coils can be galvanized to enhance their corrosion resistance.
