What Is T1 Tool Steel?
T1 Tool Steel is an 18% tungsten-based high-speed steel (HSS) known for its hardness, wear resistance, and toughness. It is air- or oil-hardened, with high cutting performance, red hardness, and tensile strength (63-66 HRC after heat treatment). T1 is widely used in cutting tools, such as drills and reamers, and for machining high-strength steels, tough alloys, and abrasive materials. While it offers good weldability and fair machinability, it is less formable than other steels.

T1 Tool Steel Heat Treatment
Forging
T1 Tool Steel should be forged within a temperature range of 926°C to 1149°C (1700°F to 2100°F). During this process, it is important to cool the steel slowly in dry sand or other insulating media.
Annealing
Heat T1 Tool Steel to a temperature range of 871°C to 899°C (1600°F to 1650°F). Once the steel has reached the desired temperature, it should cool slowly at a rate of 1°C per minute (35°F per hour) until it reaches 538°C (1000°F). Using insulating media during the cooling process yields the best results.
Stress Relief
For stress relieving after rough machining, heat T1 Tool Steel to a temperature range of 593°C to 704°C (1100°F to 1300°F). The steel should be cooled slowly.
Hardening
Preheat the steel to a temperature range of 815°C to 844°C (1500°F to 1550°F). The steel should remain in the furnace for 45 minutes per 25.44 mm(1 inch) of thickness, with the heating rate kept as slow as possible.
Tempering
The temperature should range from 1022°F to 1058°F, and it is recommended to hold the steel at this temperature for at least two hours. For optimal results, double tempering (2+2 hours) is advised, with the usual tempering temperature for cutting tools between 1000°F and 1075°F. Higher temperatures between 1100°F and 1200°F can be used for tools requiring a tougher, less brittle structure.
