- Normalizing
- 317 stainless steel typically does not undergo normalizing as it is an austenitic stainless steel.
- Solution Annealing
- Heated to a temperature typically between 1040°C and 1120°C (1900°F to 2050°F) and then rapidly cooled, usually by quenching in water or air.
- Annealing
- Usually used for wire. Heated to 00°C to 900°C (1470°F to 1650°F) and then slowly cooled. The temperature for annealing is generally lower than for solution annealing.
- Quenching
- Used for pipe and tube. Rapidly cooled, usually in water or air, immediately after annealing.
- Not typically used for bar, wire, or sheet.
- Stress Relieving
- Heated to a temperature typically between 600°C and 900°C (1110°F to 1650°F) and then slowly cooled.
