Heat Treatment
Heat Treatment
Common heat treatment methods of SS 304/304L/304H plate include:
- Normalizing
- 304, 304L, and 304H stainless steel typically do not undergo normalizing.
- Annealing
- 304: Annealing temperature 1010°C-1120°C, followed by rapid cooling (water quenching).
- 304L: Annealing temperature 1010°C-1100°C, followed by rapid cooling (water quenching).
- 304H: Annealing temperature 1050°C-1120°C, followed by rapid cooling (water quenching).
- Quenching
- After annealing, all three require rapid cooling (water quenching) to prevent intergranular corrosion.
- 304L is less sensitive to intergranular corrosion due to lower carbon content.
- 304H is more prone to carbide precipitation during heat treatment, so careful cooling rate control is necessary.
- Tempering
- 304 series stainless steel is usually not tempered.
- 304H may occasionally be tempered after high-temperature applications to stabilize its properties, but this is not a standard procedure.
