309 stainless steel is an austenitic stainless steel. It is resistant to high temperatures, corrosion, and sulfur attack, but is not very resistant to carbon absorption. SS 309 can be used for slight oxidation, nitriding, consolidation, and thermal cycling applications, but the maximum use temperature must be reduced. SS309 is tough and ductile, easy to manufacture and process, with sheets typically used for commercial and decorative purposes, and plates for industrial and structural purposes.

- Annealing
- Heat to 1040°C to 1150°C (1900°F to 2100°F), hold, then cool slowly.
- Improves machinability and uniform mechanical properties.
- Solution annealing
- Heat to 1050°C to 1100°C (1920°F to 2010°F), hold, then cool rapidly.
- Enhances corrosion resistance and improves toughness.
- Quenching
- Heat the steel to a high temperature zone and then cool rapidly (such as water quenching or oil quenching) to increase the hardness and strength of the material.
- 309 stainless steel may use this method in some applications, but quenching is usually not required due to its austenitic structure.
- Tempering
- Heat the quenched steel again to a lower temperature (usually 200-400°C) and then cool naturally.
- Reduce brittleness after quenching and improve toughness.
- Normalizing
- Heating the steel to 950-1050°C and then cooling it in air.
- Refines the grains and improves mechanical properties.
