- Normalizing
- Heat to 900°C to 955°C (1650°F to 1750°F) and hold at this temperature. Then, cool in the air.
- Refines grain structure and improves mechanical properties.
- Annealing
- Heat to 815°C to 900°C (1500°F to 1650°F) and hold at this temperature. Then, cool slowly in the furnace to room temperature.
- Reduces hardness and improves machinability.
- Quenching
- Heat to 925°C to 1010°C (1700°F to 1850°F) and hold at the temperature. Then, rapidly cool by air or oil quenching.
- Increases hardness and forms a martensitic structure.
- Tempering
- Heat to 200°C to 600°C (400°F to 1100°F) and hold to relieve stresses from quenching. Cool slowly in the air.
- Adjusts hardness and improves toughness.
- Stress Relieving
- If necessary, heat to 650°C to 760°C (1200°F to 1400°F) and hold to reduce residual stresses from welding or cold working. Cool slowly in the air.
- Reduces residual stresses and improves stability.
