Heat Treatment

- Annealing
- Heat to 820°C to 900°C (1508°F to 1652°F) and hold at temperature. Then slowly cool in the furnace.
- Softens the material, relieves internal stresses, and enhances ductility.
- Solution Treatment
- Heat to 980°C to 1050°C (1796°F to 1922°F) and hold at temperature. Then rapidly cool, typically by air cooling or water quenching.
- Dissolves carbides and ensures optimal corrosion resistance.
- Stress Relieving
- Heat to 400°C to 600°C (752°F to 1112°F) and hold at temperature. Cool in air.
- Reduces residual stresses and improves dimensional stability.
- Stabilization
- Heat to 850°C to 900°C (1562°F to 1652°F) and hold at temperature. Then air cool.
- Enhances resistance to intergranular corrosion.
- Quenching
- Not typically applied to 446 stainless steel, as quenching can cause brittleness.
