- Annealing
- Process: Heat the 201 stainless steel to a temperature range of 1010°C – 1093°C (1850°F – 2000°F), then rapidly quench it in water or air.
- Purpose: Relieves internal stress, softens the material, and improves its ductility and corrosion resistance.
- Solution Treatment
- Process: Heat the stainless steel to about 1010°C – 1093°C (1850°F – 2000°F) and then rapidly cool it in water or air to retain its austenitic structure.
- Purpose: Dissolves carbides and restores corrosion resistance lost by welding or high temperature exposure, improving ductility and toughness.
- Stress Relieving : It is not commonly used for 201 stainless steel.
- Quenching, Tempering, Precipitation Hardening, and Hardening are not applicable due to the austenitic structure of 201 stainless steel.

Characteristic
- 201 sheet has moderate corrosion resistance and is suitable for less severe environments. However, it may not be suitable for highly acidic or high salinity environments.
- 201 sheet has good mechanical strength and can be hardened quickly by cold working. It is harder and stronger than 304 stainless steel, but slightly less ductile.
- 201 sheet has a lower nickel content than other austenitic stainless steels (such as 304), making it a more affordable option while still maintaining many of the desirable stainless steel properties.
- 201 sheet has a variety of surface finishes (e.g., 2B, BA) and is often used in decorative applications due to its aesthetic appearance.
- 201 sheet is easy to weld, but post-weld annealing may be required to prevent cracking or corrosion under certain conditions. It can be easily formed, bent, or rolled, especially after annealing.
- 201 sheet is not magnetic in the annealed state, but cold working can make it partially magnetic.
