By Microstructures

Stainless steel sheet metal includes different microstructures, which determine its properties and applications, Here are the main types classified by their microstructures:

Austenitic 

Because of its FCC structure, this microstructure offers superior corrosion resistance and high formability. It is frequently utilized in kitchen appliances and chemical processing equipment. Typically has a Rockwell B hardness range of 70-90. Austenitic steels are generally softer and more ductile.

Ferritic 

Known for its resistance to oxidation and stress corrosion cracking, ferritic stainless steel is used in automotive parts and kitchenware. Generally has a Rockwell B hardness range of 80-100. Ferritic steels are somewhat harder than austenitic steels.

Martensitic 

This type provides superior strength and hardness but has reduced corrosion resistance compared to other types. It is often used in cutlery and surgical instruments. It can range from 60-80 Rockwell C hardness, depending on heat treatment. Martensitic steels are known for their high hardness and strength.

Duplex 

Blending austenitic and ferritic structures, duplex stainless steel features high strength and enhanced resistance to stress corrosion. It is employed in marine environments and chemical processing. Usually falls between 70-90 Rockwell B hardness. Duplex steels have a balance of hardness and toughness.

Precipitation Hardening 

This microstructure enables high strength and hardness through heat treatment. It is used in aerospace components and high-strength applications. Can achieve hardness levels of 30-50 Rockwell C. This type of stainless steel is heat-treated to achieve high hardness.
